An award-winning screenwriter, producer, TV writer, playwright, novelist, and professor, Avril Descartes is both LGBTQIA and disabled. She honed her craft at the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University where she received her MFA in Dramatic Writing, after graduating magna cum laude with her BA from the School of Theater at George Mason University. She has worked in the film and television industry for the past ten years, including writing for primetime television, developing original series with four production companies, and penning and producing an internationally-awarded short film. Her mission is to use her unique voice for change, to speak for the silenced, turn trauma into drama, and share magic with the world through her work.

in her words...

The renowned philosopher René Descartes was my third cousin 14 generations ago. From an early age, it became clear that I inherited his adoration for the sciences, and his philosophical quests to discern purpose and meaning for our place in the world. He was also a prolific writer, with unshakeable drive and an unending quest for knowledge. Throughout the trials and tribulations of my life, writing has always been my saving grace. I write from my marrow, summoning all of my strength, so each sentence is crafted with the utmost care.  I write prose, poetry, music, and scripts for the screen and stage.

my storytelling is...

sanguine, sardonic, sensual, blasphemous, eccentric, and oft noir.

a few of my favorite things...

Five-dollar words, Oxford commas, Taylor Swift's lyricism and cathartic bridges, ripping skeletons from closets, rummaging through rubble under the rug, unearthing brutal truths, and discovering clandestine moments of magic in the world.

I am fueled by...

incurable ambition, a fire within my soul, unadulterated vengeance, a need to shout for the silenced, and the curious flightpath of hope.

you can find me...

dreaming of roaming the streets of Manhattan, listening to All Too Well (10 minute version) (Taylor's Version), sipping an oatmilk latté, waiting for Halloween, sporting a stately grin, laughing incessantly.
